Metering Requirements for Three-Phase Power

A three-phase upgrade may require changes to the electricity meter if the existing metering arrangement is not suitable for the new supply.

If meter installation, replacement or related work is required, the relevant electricity metering work can be considered as part of the overall upgrade rather than becoming a separate issue later.

Switchboard Requirements for the Upgrade

A complete switchboard replacement is not automatically required when moving from single phase to three phase.

The existing board needs to be suitable for the new supply and the electrical loads it will serve. If its condition or configuration is not suitable, switchboard upgrade work may also form part of the project.

Where switchboard changes are required, the electrical installation needs to meet applicable Australian requirements, including the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.

Level 2 Work for Your Supply Upgrade

Some three-phase upgrades involve electrical infrastructure that requires authorised Level 2 work rather than standard electrical work inside the property.

This can include service mains, service lines, metering, disconnection and reconnection. Where these parts of the connection need changing, the work must follow the requirements of the relevant electricity distributor.
